Ivybridge Cricket Club - 1st XI Reports & Scorecard

Babbacombe CC vs. Ivybridge CC - Saturday 11th August 2007

Ivybridge’s charge for promotion stalled slightly on Saturday as the only managed the better half of the draw away to Babbacombe. Adam Birch returned as Adam Warden was unavailable, as well as Nick Gunn being replaced by Sam Henderson. Jacobs, centurion for the seconds last week stepped up as Des Solomon is on holiday.

Andy Johnson lost another toss and was asked to bat first at the Babbacombe Bowl. The opening pair of Johnson and Gareth Andrews made a slow and steady start, but Andrews was undone by a full Terry Farkins ball that bowled him with the score only on 10. Kevin Jacobs joined the skipper at the crease and worked runs off the openers. Farkins bowling especially tight, with his first seven overs went for just eight runs.

The Ivies 50 came up in the 18th over at which point former Devon spinner and Babbacombe captain, Paul Bates brought himself into the attack. Johnson however was not going to let him settle into the attack, after hitting his first ball for four, he took Bates for three sixes in his next three overs, reaching his half century along the way. Bates however dropped a difficult caught and bowled chance off Johnson in his second over. Jacobs was also showing his attacking side and started to find the boundary regularly, and was also given a lifeline when he was dropped off an easy chance at mid-on off the bowling of Bachowler.

The pair added 103 to the total before Jacobs walked across his stumps on 40 and the ball struck him on his front pad dead in front. Karl Prescott joined Johnson and a partnership of 15 came from just 10 balls before the skipper eventually fell, caught for a very well made 76 off 93 balls. Kelvin Trent managed to put 59 on with Prescott in just 7 overs before Prescott missed a straight one and was bowled. This started a mini collapse for Ivybridge as five wickets were lost for 20 runs and in six overs, including two first ball ducks from Sam Henderson and Andy Coker.

However Trent was still in on 37 and he had a free reign with the tail, and he took it, as he added 37 in the last 2 overs with Michael Anderson, who scored just 2. He let his arms free as Bates’ last over scored 6,6,4,1,1,6 allowing Ivybridge to declared two overs early giving his side an extra two overs to bowl Babbacombe out and get the outright win and 20 points.

Ivybridge started with some tight bowling from Anderson and James Bullock, with Anderson bowling five maidens in his first five overs. This also included the wicket of Martin Thompson trapping him in front. Bullock managed to find the edge of Shaun Porters bat and an easy catch was taken behind the stumps by Coker, leaving the hosts on 10-2. Terry Farkins put on 34 with Rob Reading before the bowling change of Trent for Bullock did the trick as he took a sharp caught and bowled to remove Farkins for 15.

Trent then made the next breakthrough as a defensive shot from Sutherland found Coker’s gloves after a slight noise and with an appeal from the Ivybridge players, the umpires finger was raised. With Anderson replaced by Prescott he then found his way through Reading’s defence with a perfectly bowled googly that went through the gate and bowled him for a very patient 14. Babbacombe were left on 52-5 after 26 overs.

However, Ivybridge were frustrated by Bloxham and Cocker as they added 125 for the sixth wicket in a little under 20 overs. The openers came back and Anderson had Cocker caught behind for a well made 74 but when Bullock had Bloxham caught at leg slip by Henderson for 44, Ivybridge needed 3 wickets in the last two overs. Babbacombe managed to hold on with Bates and Gerry Passmore both on 0 not out and Babbacombe on 182-7, and giving Ivybridge just 14 points.
