Ivybridge Cricket Club - 1st XI Reports & Scorecard
Ivybridge CC vs. Babbacombe CC - Saturday 9th June 2007
Ivybridge had the better of a drawn game against Babbacombe at Erme Playing Fields on Saturday. Ivybridge made two changes from the previous weeks win at Dawlish with Chris Greenhouse replacing the unavailable Gareth Andrews and Kev Jacobs replacing the injured Andy Coker on the morning of the match. Coker pulled out after a recurrence of an old back injury following the club’s Twenty/20 game at Cornwood on Friday night.
Skipper Andy Johnson lost the toss, but Babbacombe asked Ivybridge to bat first and the although there some early life in the pitch for Tim Goodwin and Terry Farkins, Johnson and Jacobs started solidly with no major scares.
Progress was initially slow but eventually Johnson and Jacobs started playing their shots and were able to put on 180 for the first wicket.
Johnson was first to 50, from just 62 balls, but Jacobs soon caught him up, hitting a succession of boundaries, including a big six down onto the football pitches at the Ermington End of the ground.
Jacobs too past fifty, as both batsmen managed to rotate the strike against the slow left arm spin of Babbacombe skipper Paul Bates, who bowled with a deep set field for most of his 13 overs.
Bates did cause some problems with a good control of flight, and dropped both batsmen off his own bowling in the same over. The breakthrough eventually came with Jacobs going for another big hit, this time being well caught on the boundary at long on.
Karl Prescott joined his skipper in a rejigged order which was allowed some flexibility because of the great start. Prescott smashed his way to 28 from 19 balls before dragging a full ball from Goodwin on to his stumps. Kelvin Trent played in the same fashion and made a run a ball 14, before being caught off Farkins.
By this stage, skipper Johnson was nearing his century and his side the 250 mark. At this point Johnson made the brave decision to declare with 3 overs to go to allow his side a greater chance of bowling out the opposition. It meant he missed his first century for the club, but the opportunity of 3 extra overs was too good to miss.
Paul Veale and James Bullock found early movement as Babbacombe’s opening bowlers had, but they managed to take an early wicket with Bullock having Thompson caught by Pete Boast at cover. Babbacombe struggled to keep up with the required rate and it took Porter 36 balls to get off the mark.
Adam Birch managed to remove Porter, caught behind by Des Solomon. Mike Anderson then quickly picked up Farkins, again caught by Boast, this time at mid-off. And two overs later the Australian was at it again, this time removing the stubborn Paul Sutherland (31) caught behind and repeating the trick next ball with a delivery that lifted to dismiss Tim Goodwin first ball.
This left Babbacombe at 61 for 5 and in trouble.
Andy Johnson turned to Karl Prescott and Pete Boast who both then made further breakthroughs. Prescott had Cocker caught at mid-off by Veale and in the next over a great low catch from Prescott at short mid-wicket off Boast left Babbacombe at 86 for 7.
Tom Ince (51) and Ian Sosnowski (22 not out) then provided some resistance and were able to add 72 in 12 overs, before the return of James Bullock brought a wicket for Ivybridge via a third catch in the innings for Pete Boast.
Paul Bates joined Sosnowski and the pair resisted for a further 5 overs before Prescott got one through Bates defence.
That left Ivybridge with 3 overs to take the final wicket. Michael Anderson could not find the final wicket and Ivybridge had to be content with a draw and fifteen points.
