Ivybridge Cricket Club - 1st XI Reports & Scorecard

Ivybridge CC vs. Clyst Hydon CC - Saturday 12th May 2007

Ivybridge got back to winning ways with a four wicket win against Clyst Hydon last Saturday.  Before the game, the Ivybridge players observed a minutes silence in memory of club stalwart Ray Cox, who sadly passed away during the previous week.  Ray was a real clubman and had played for the club for in excess of 20 years, having played at Yealmpton prior to that.  Apart from playing, Ray had also served in a variety of committee roles, as second team captain and was a coach for various colts sides during a period when many of the current first and second team players were coming through the club.

Fittingly, the side put in a good performance on the day and bounced back well from the opening day defeat at Stoke Gabriel.

On a overcast day, the game was fortunate to go ahead as the showers managed to stay away.  With heavy rain on the week leading up to the game the pitch was damp and offered some assistance to the bowlers.  With that in mind, Ivy’s skipper Andy Johnson opted to bowl first.  His bowlers responded with Paul Veale and James Bullock bowling a tight early line.  There was a marked improvement from the previous game when there were far too many wides bowled.  Bullock got the deserved early break-through as he bowled Mike Glenny with a full delivery.

Alan Baggs and former Sandford batsman Ian Sutton got the score to 40 after 15 overs before Michael Anderson, who had replaced Paul Veale at the Ermington End, broke through again as his extra pace proved sufficient to bowl Baggs.

Graham Trude and Sutton both batted well in then adding 73 for the third wicket in seventeen overs.  The pair were just looking like they would get on top when Adam Birch was introduced to the attack.  The change of bowling did the trick. First, Birch picked up Trude, caught by Des Solomon at mid-wicket as he tried to pull a ball which did not come on to the bat as he expected.  With the next ball, Birch then trapped Clinton Lewis lbw with a yorker.  Lewis had a hit a century against Ivybridge in the game at Clyst Hydon last season so it was a crucial double breakthrough.

Karl Prescott was bowling a generally good line from the other end and there was soon a third wicket in short succession as Prescott picked up Sutton (65) caught at point by Des Solomon as he tried to run the ball down to third man.  The mini collapse had left Clyst on 117 for 5, having been 113 for 2.  Chris Holmes and Kevin Sercombe looked to move the score along, but they both perished, again in quick succession, Holmes magnificently caught and bowled by Prescott as he dived forward to take a low return catch.  Sercombe followed in the next over, nicking a ball from Michael Anderson to wicket-keeper Andy Coker.  This left Clyst looking in some trouble at 134 for 7, with 8 overs remaining.

Clyst skipper Martyn Dudley and William Greig got Clyst to a respectable total with some big hitting by Greig and good running between the wickets as they then added an unbroken 49 for the eighth wicket in what was left of the innings.  This meant Clyst were able to post a total of 183 for 7.

After tea, Ivybridge set about chasing their target.  Andy Johnson and Gareth Andrews had to face some tight early bowling from Kevin Sercombe and Mike Johnson.  The Ivybridge batters had to fight hard, and Johnson in particular struggled to find his usual fluency.  At the other end, Andrews found some of his old form as he stroked 5 fours in moving to 28 off 45 balls before he tried to pull Mike Johnson, but got through the stroke too early, just as Trude had done earlier for Clyst, and was caught at mid-on.

There were shades of the previous week when suddenly, Ivybridge then lost two more wickets quickly as Andy Johnson and then Des Solomon followed Andrews back to the pavilion.  The treble break-through left Ivybridge 51 for 3.

Karl Prescott and Kelvin Trent also had to fight hard as the pitch started to produce some uneven bounce, which was extracted by, in particular, the tall William Greig.

Prescott reined in his usual attacking strokeplay and Ivybridge started to wrestle the game away from Clyst as the pair added 80 on 20 overs.  Clyst brought back their reliable opening bowler Kevin Sercombe who picked up three wickets in an over by first picking up the wicket of Prescott, caught behind by Sutton, and then Andy Coker and Michael Anderson.  Anderson can count himself a shade unlucky to have been caught behind, as the ball appeared to flick the back of his bat after bouncing up of his pad, looping into the keepers hands, as he tried to turn the ball down to fine leg.

The wobble left Ivybridge with doubts in the mind after the collapse of the previous week, and the pressure was on with the hosts needing 50 to win from the last ten overs with only 4 wickets in hand.  The turning point back to Ivybridge came with 8 overs remaining when Mike Johnson’s eleventh over went for 13 runs, which included a wide ball which went to the boundary resulting in 5 being scored. Five runs came from Sercombe’s next over to keep up with the required rate, and then Johnson’s next over went for a further 10.

This left Ivybridge needing just 14 from the final 5 overs, with Trent now playing some handsome shots, and being ably supporting by Paul Veale.  Trent took full control hitting the final runs quickly, and winning the game with a six over mid-wicket and into the River Erme.

Trent finished unbeaten on 82, having hit 13 fours and 2 sixes.  His innings took 80 balls and he occupied the crease for a around an hour and three-quarters.  The win has moved Ivybridge up several places in the fledgling C Division table having gained 18 points from the match.
