Ivybridge Cricket Club - 1st XI Reports & Scorecard
Ivybridge CC vs. Cockington Corinthians - Saturday 25th August 2007
Ivybridge still harbour hopes of promotion going into the last weekend of games in the Devon Cricket League season. Their hopes rest on second placed Stoke Gabriel slipping up against Kilmington, who are fighting against relegation, and the Ivies getting the better of Kingsbridge in the South Hams derby tomorrow.
Last weekend could not have gone better for Ivybridge, as leaders Heathcoat did them a favour by beating Stoke Gabriel and Ivybridge managed to dispatch previously third placed Cockington at Erme Valley.
Things didn’t start too well though as skipper Andy Johnson missed out on the toss, with Cockington skipper Darren Scott calling right and opting to insert the home side. Things seemed to go from bad to worse too, as Johnson lost his stand in opening partner, Andy Coker, in the first over, bowled by a Scott Colegate yorker.
Johnson and Chris Greenhouse battled hard against Colegate and his new ball partner, former Torquay all-rounder, Shaun Needham. Johnson had got Needham away to the fence on a few occasions when he changed his mind in mid shot to a short delivery and could only edge the ball to the grateful Scott at first slip.
Karl Prescott joined Greenhouse and played in his usual attacking style and got Ivybridge to 50 in good time at the 15 over mark. A Cockington bowling change did the trick though with Karl Prescott getting a leading edge to Peter Needham’s first ball, scoping the ball to Scott, this time at square leg, where the Cockington skipper took a simple catch. The game then swung towards Cockington, with Kelvin Trent edging his second ball to slip in trying to hit a square cut to a poor delivery from Needham.
Adam Birch then produced his best first team innings of the season at a crucial time in adding 39 with Greenhouse for the fifth wicket. Birch was going well, but played unnecessarily across the line to a moving ball from the returning Scott Colegate and lost his off stump. Left hander Sam Henderson soon followed, trapped lbw, also to Colegate, which left Ivybridge struggling at 93 for 6 with 20 overs still left in their innings.
Nick Gunn and Greenhouse then mounted another Ivybridge mini-recovery adding another 32 in 9 overs before Greenhouse was unluckily run out in Colegate’s last over. Nick Gunn played a nice drive back down the ground, but Colegate got a touch in his follow-through diverting the ball onto the stumps. Like any good batsman, Greenhouse was backing up looking for a run and was left stranded as the ball hit the stumps. His innings of 32 took two and a quarter hours and occupied 92 balls, but in the context of the match was to prove crucial.
Gunn and Michael Anderson managed to get the score to 148, before a third Needham brother (this time Matt) polished off the tail.
With Ivybridge all out, Cockington had 52 overs to chase down their target after tea. The first couple of overs went for runs, but thereafter Michael Anderson and James Bullock settled into a good line and length and caused trouble to the openers. Bullock in particular managed to frustrate Shaun Needham into playing a loose stroke, with the Cockington man caught at mid-off by Prescott.
Fellow opener Frazer followed in Bullock’s next over, trapped plum in front by a full delivery.
Peter Needham and Scott Colegate took their time in getting Cockington to 41 for 2, and forced Ivy’s skipper Johnson into a bowling change, which saw the introduction of the leg spin of Karl Prescott. This change was to also prove crucial as Prescott induced a dramatic collapse.
He bamboozled Colegate with a googly from the last ball of first over, and in Anderson’s next over the visitors lost three wickets. Anderson bowled Matt Needham with the second ball of the over (the batsmen’s first) and two balls later, Cockington skipper Scott was on his way too, after a farcical run out.
Scott kidded on to take a run to short leg, but a breakdown of communication with Peter Needham who got dragged down the pitch by his skipper’s movement, meant that Scott was slow to react in turning round, allowing keeper Andy Coker to grab the ball and hit the stumps with a direct hit from around 5 feet, leaving Scott short of his ground.
Anderson then removed new man Graham Furze with a short ball that could not cope with, ballooning the ball to keeper Coker who took a straightforward catch. The turnaround left Cockington in the mire at 42 for 6.
Peter Needham and Neil Stanlake tried to steady the ship, but Needham, clearly unsettled by the run out of his skipper, tried to take on Prescott by coming down the track, missed and was bowled off a slight inside edge. At 50 for 7, the game was up and Anderson and Prescott soon finished the job off with the visitors all out for 66.
