Ivybridge Cricket Club - 1st XI Reports & Scorecard

Dawlish & Teignmouth CC vs. Ivybridge CC - Saturday 2nd June 2007

Ivybridge recovered from the previous weeks setback against Heathcoat with a professional performance against Dawlish & Teignmouth last Saturday.  Andy Johnson’s side responded well to that disappointment and looked much more like the side who won two back to back promotions and finished third in the league last season.

Dawlish skipper Andy Lockyer opted to bowl first on a Sandy Lane pitch which looked like it would offer some early seam movement.  Dawlish have bowled and fielded well so far this year, but struggled with the bat and were looking to put some pressure on the visitors.

Ivybridge openers Andy Johnson and Gareth Andrews looked to be positive early on though and despite some good bowling by Tim O’Connell and Jamie Day, Ivybridge moving into a good position reaching fifty from just over 10 overs.

By this point, Dawlish’s O’Connell was starting to struggling with his landing area and was warned for running on the pitch.  He also managed to run into trouble with warnings for bowling beamers and having bowled his last over from round the wicket to try and avoid any more problems, Lockyer had little choice but to take him off.

Parsons had replaced Day bowling up the hill and made the key breakthrough as Johnson was caught behind, trying to nudge a ball down to third man.

Des Solomon joined Andrews and the pair had to continue to work hard against some useful off-spin from Richard Fisher who had replaced O’Connell.  Parsons was still causing the odd problem from the other end by getting the odd ball to bounce and it was from such a delivery that Andrews was shortly after dropped by keeper Hutchings as the ball looped up off the bat.

Andrews and Solomon carried on setting a good platform with some hard graft.  Eventually Andrews started to time the ball much better and had hit four quick boundaries when he was bowled for 62, coming down the track to Sam Greensitt and chopping the ball on to his stumps.  It was Andrews second successive fifty in league cricket and came from 104 balls including 8 boundaries.  Andrews and Solomon added 96 in 20 overs.

Solomon followed quickly after, and despite some quick runs from Karl Prescott and Kelvin Trent, Ivybridge lost a few quick wickets in the pursuit of maximum batting points for getting to 200.  Adam Birch (13 not out) and Michael Anderson (19 not out) batted well in adding an unbeaten 28 for the eighth wicket which ensured Ivybridge got to a challenging target of 212 for 7 in their 46 overs.

After tea, the ball continued to move around off the pitch and in the air for Ivybridge’s opening bowlers and James Bullock made the early break-through with his first ball in the second over of the Dawlish innings.  Dawlish’s top order struggled against the moving ball and Bullock had soon also sent Fisher back to the pavilion, cleaned bowled by an in-swinger.

Dawlish skipper Lockyer joined Billy Alcock and the pair did then offer some resistance to the Ivybridge bowling.  Bullock then picked up the third wicket, that of Alcock in a very unusual fashion.  Bullock bowled a half volley, which Alcock rightly tried to hit down the ground.  The ball was hit hard, although in the air, and in trying to take a tricky caught and bowled chance, Bullock could only deflect the ball, via a glancing blow on the head, to the grateful hands of Pete Boast at mid-on.

Not only was it an extremely unfortunate dismissal for Alcock, but it left Bullock with a cut on his head, which required patching up.  Adam Birch stepped in to complete Bullock’s over while he went off for medical attention.  Bullock returned to the field with no lasting effects a couple of overs later.
Having bowled a good spell, but with no luck, Paul Veale was replaced by Australian Michael Anderson who bowled his best spell for the club so far.  He took two wickets in his second over, the first caught by Trent at first slip and the second cleaned bowled, to leave Dawlish in trouble at 43 for 5.

Chris Partridge stayed around for a while to support Lockyer as the pair resisted for 7 overs.  The next wicket, the crucial one of Lockyer, came as the leg spin of Karl Prescott was introduced to the attack.  Prescott slipped one through Lockyer’s defence and from then on the end of the match was a matter of time away.

Anderson picked up Partridge in the next over with a good yorker, and with Prescott then taking two more quick wickets in the next over to mop up the tail Ivybridge were on the brink.  Despite smashing Anderson’s first ball of the next over for four, Hutchings was also soon on his way too, a fourth victim for Anderson as Dawlish were all out for a paltry 64.

Ivybridge picked up a maximum 20 points for the 148 run win which sees them move up the table.
