Ivybridge Cricket Club - 1st XI Reports & Scorecard
Ivybridge CC vs. Feniton CC - Saturday 19th May 2007
Ivybridge had the best of a drawn game against East Devon side Feniton at Erme Playing Fields on Saturday. Andy Johnson’s side went into the game unchanged from last weeks win against Clyst Hydon. Veteran seamer Pete Boast was the only doubt going into the game, but came through a fitness test on his hamstring at the club’s training session on Thursday night and took the field with his team-mates.
Having won the toss, skipper Johnson decided to bat first, and promptly got the innings off to a flying start despatching Russell Witton’s first ball for six. The early going did not continue in that vein and Witton made a breakthrough in the nineth over having Gareth Andrews stumped with the score on just 21.
Des Solomon joined Johnson and their pair added 60 in the next 14 overs. Solomon had got to 23 and was just starting to get going having hit 3 boundaries, when he was out caught off Mason Abbott.
Karl Prescott joined his captain and the pair also kept the scoring rate moving along. Prescott took a little time to play himself in, but managed to keep the scoreboard moving in support of his captain. Johnson reached his fifty in 83 minutes from 69 balls and once he had done so, started to cut loose. Johnson and Prescott added 77 for the fourth wicket, taking the score past 150 in the process. With 10 overs remaining in the innings, Johnson succumbed caught for an excellent 92 off the bowling of Adrian Pullin.
His innings took a shade over 2 hours and he faced 98 balls. It is the second time Johnson has narrowly missed a century for in first team cricket and it can be only a matter of time before he succeeds.
Kelvin Trent (12) and Paul Veale (10) in turn joined Prescott and with wickets in hand they had the freedom to hit out in search of taking the score past 200. The home side eventually got there as Aussie Michael Anderson and Prescott added an unbroken 26 for the eighth wicket. In the process, Prescott took his score past fifty, finishing unbeaten on 59. Prescott hit 3 fours and 2 sixes, including one on to the roof of the nets at Erme Playing Fields, and his innings occupied 74 balls in just under an hour and a half.
Ivybridge will have been satisfied with their batting performance as they secured maximum batting points and set off after tea in search of the outright win. They got off to a good start in search of that goal with Haysam run out early on.
The Feniton top order found it difficult to score runs against the Ivybridge opening bowlers, Paul Veale and James Bullock. It was Veale who made the second breakthrough on 10 overs, having Kingdon caught by Pete Boast.
Graham Tucker (24) and Adrian Pullin (26) then posted a fifty stand taking the score to 85 for 2, occupying 16 overs. They found the seam bowling of first change Pete Boast much more to their liking as he went for 20 in his 4 overs.
The introduction of the leg spin of Karl Prescott and the extra pace of Australian Michael Anderson. Anderson made a quick double-breakthrough, as Pullin skied a catch to Pete Boast and Tucker had his stumps knocked over.
Anderson followed that up by bowling Easterbrook and with the tail exposed with 15 overs remaining it looked like Ivybridge could bet set for a win. Prescott soon made the victory look more likely dismissing Pyle, Bright, and Abbott in three overs.
The last of Feniton’s top order batsman, Carnall, held firm however and found able support from Witton in seeking to hold out for the draw. Prescott made a key breakthrough, bowling Carnall for 36 with 8 overs remaining. Feniton’s last pair managed to secure enough runs to gain the points for a losing draw and were then in full defensive mode.
With Prescott having finished his allotted 13 overs, Andy Johnson brought back James Bullock and also tried an over from left armer Kelvin Trent. However, the last pair managed to hold on and gain the draw.
