Ivybridge Cricket Club - 1st XI Reports & Scorecard

Feniton CC vs. Ivybridge CC - Saturday 21st July 2007

Ivybridge lost their first game since late May in a rain affected match away to Feniton by 2 wickets. An unchanged Ivybridge side travelled to east Devon for the second consecutive week, and with skipper Andy Johnson losing the toss, the visitors were once again asked to bat first on a damp pitch.

Going was far from easy and like last week, Andy Johnson lost his wicket early, only five balls into the match. Trying to work the ball through mid-wicket, the ball held up on the pitch, gifting an easy catch to the Feniton skipper Mark Kingdon, off the bowling of Witton.

Des Solomon joined Gareth Andrews at the crease and the pair managed to work runs, with Andrews picking up a quick 20 runs in an 11 ball spell, taking particular fancy to Wittons opening partner, John Pyle. Pyle (0-20) was then replaced by Australian Mason Abbott down the hill, and he struck in his first over. He had Solomon hit on the front pad. With Solomon thinking it had hit outside the line, he was surprised to see the raised finger from the umpire at the other end.

Gareth Andrews then fell, bowled by Abbott, after a tight spell of bowling from Feniton, which allowed Andrews to score only 1 off 16 balls. Chris Greenhouse had yet to open his account when Karl Prescott joined him at the crease. Prescott was his usual attacking self, and when Witton was replaced by skipper, Kingdon, it allowed him to free his arms in a loose first over and take ten runs off of it.

Greenhouse however, was finding it hard going and was eventually undone by an Abbott slower ball that clipped the top of middle. Greenhouse departed having had a 20 run stand with Prescott, of which he only made three runs. This brought Kelvin Trent to the crease. With the half way stage approaching, Prescott continued to score runs quickly on a slow and wet Devon track, but on the penultimate ball before drinks, Kingdon got a bit of extra bounce out of the pitch and Prescott got a fine edge through to Dave Hayson behind the stumps.

Ivybridge needed to bat sensibly from now on, having been 65-5 at drinks. And that’s what Andy Coker and Trent did. The odd single or two came now and again, but after 33 overs, the rain that had threatened the match beforehand came back. And hard! Tea was taken early and it was 93 minutes later that play resumed. With the second innings not allowed to start any later than 6.30pm, Ivybridge’s innings was cut to 38 overs, which left only 5 more overs to bat.

Coker was found out of his ground trying to hit over the top, having scored four in a 36 ball innings and putting 13 on with Trent in 12 overs. The tail needed to hit out, or get out. The pitch was so wet to bat on, they eventually got out, with the last wicket falling to a run out due to a misunderstanding by Nick Gunn and James Bullock. Ivybridge were bowled out for 88.

The pitch was still very wet, and not to help Ivy, the bowlers could now only bowl 11 overs each as the game had been cut short. Like last week, while defending a low score, Ivybridge struck early, and once again it was the Australian Michael Anderson, who had Adrian Pullin caught behind by Coker.

James Bullock once again had the new ball with Anderson and with them both bowling tight lines, runs were not easy to come by for Feniton. Anderson then struck again, clean bowling David Carnal, and at 17-2, the game was open.

However a stand of 37 between skipper Kingdon and Graham Tucker, took the game away from Ivybridge. Prescott had replaced Bullock (0-27) and had Tucker caught by Solomon at short cover. At 54-3, Feniton were cruising. Kingdon then added a further 19 with keeper Hayson, before Kingdon played back to a ball he should have come forward to, and was trapped lbw off Prescott.

Hayson then fell, caught at cover by Bullock, again off Prescott. When Stuart Bright was adjudged lbw and then Easterbrook was caught somewhat spectacularly at short cover, one handed by Solomon, Feniton had lost their last four wickets for 9 runs, and Prescott had taken them all.

Bullock returned from the top end but was unable to make another breakthrough. Prescott did however, but when he had Abbott stumped Feniton were 2 runs short of their target, with two wickets remaining. And when a leading edge off Prescott then went agonisingly over Adam Birch’s head for two runs, it was the end of an unsuccessful game for Ivybridge and four points.
