Ivybridge Cricket Club - 1st XI Reports & Scorecard

Heathcoat CC vs. Ivybridge CC - Saturday 19th May 2007

Ivybridge suffered a setback in their Devon League campaign last Saturday with a seven wicket reverse against Tiverton side Heathcoat.  Heathcoat captain Darren Drew had little hesitation in asking Ivybridge to bat on a pitch which offered assistance to the bowlers and some uneven bounce from the start.

Ivy’s skipper Andy Johnson and Gareth Andrews weathered the early storm though adding 42, before Menheniott bowled Johnson.  Menheniott also accounted for Des Solomon, but Karl Prescott (33) and Andrews (50) batted well to take Ivybridge to 110 for 2 with 14 overs remaining.  At this stage Ivybridge looked well set for a late charge with the bat and a decent total of 180 plus looked on the cards.

Just as Ivybridge hit the gas though, wickets started to fall.  First, Heathcoat’s South African all-rounder Shaun Dick bowled Prescott.  Kelvin Trent followed the same way in Dick’s next over to a ball that kept low.  Menheniott then picked up Andrews and Paul Veale, who smashed a long hop straight to mid wicket.

This left Ivybridge in trouble at 116 for 6 with 10 overs to go.  Andy Coker and Adam Birch seemed to be steadying the ship before disaster struck.  Coker pushed the ball through the covers for a single, only to be sent back by his partner when he was nearly at the other end, with the inevitable result.

Unsettled by the run out, Birch soon followed Coker back to the pavilion as the Ivybridge innings quickly subsided to 139 all out.

Ivybridge needed early break-throughs with the ball to put the pressure on Heathcoat.  They managed one as Bullock had Dick trapped lbw in the fourth over.  Thereafter though things went the way of Heathcoat as Chris Parks and Joe Smith added 78 in just 16 overs to effectively take things away from the visitors.

Karl Prescott’s leg spin eventually managed to peg Heathcoat back as Smith was caught by Anderson, and Adam Birch bowled well late on to also dismiss Parks, but by then the damage was done and Heathcoat were able to get their target with 15 overs remaining
