Ivybridge CC vs. Kilmington CC - Saturday 16th June 2007
On Saturday, Ivybridge returned to Devon League action with a convincing victory over East Devon side Kilmington. After overnight rain, a damp pitch offered assistance to the seam bowlers and Kelvin Trent had little hesitation in asking the visitors to bat first. Ryan Helliar (22) and skipper (10) got the home side off to a steady start, but James Bullock picked them both up, Gooding well caught at slip by Trent and Helliar caught at mid-off by Gareth Andrews as he tried to drive the ball down the ground.
Thereafter, only Dave Cook (30) put up any real resistance as Kilmington struggled against the pace of Michael Anderson at one end and the leg spin of Karl Prescott at the other. Anderson picked up his first five wicket haul for the club, all bowled, as the visitors were literally blown away as the Australian finished with 5 for 18.
Prescott also bowled well, picking up the stubborn Cook in the process, trapped lbw not playing a shot by his googly. Kilmington just managed to reach three figures, but their collapse left Ivybridge a theoretical 59 overs to reach their total.
However, during the tea interval the weather intervened. A heavy shower meant that an hour and a half were lost to rain. After a brief mopping up exercise, with the covers having done their job, play resumed at 6pm.
Ivybridge lost Gareth Andrews (0), caught behind in the first over, but Kev Jacobs (23) and Derek Solomon (29) nudged the ball around and put away some bad balls to push Ivybridge towards the target. Both departed before the target was reached but they had broken the back of the run chase and it was left to Karl Prescott (17 not out) and Kelvin Trent (10 not out) to get Ivybridge to the win before the rain arrived again.
