Ivybridge Cricket Club - XI Reports & Scorecard
Plymouth III vs. Ivybridge CC - Saturday 19th May 2007
Ivybridge’s second eleven made the short trip to Mount Wise to face Plymouth’s third eleven. The seconds were forced into four changes from the side which was named to play Kentisbeare in last weeks rain off. David Ewers and Ali Winstanley (exam commitments) and father and son Andy and Pete Abraham (family commitments) were unavailable. Mike Tuckwell, Jeff Wakeham, Josh Coker and Adam Warden were called up. Kev Jacobs took over the gloves in the absence of David Ewers. The seconds are also still without young batters Alex Jeffery and Toby Borrow due to their exam commitments.
A brief shower approximately twenty minutes before the start of play freshened up the surface and stand-in skipper Nick Thomas had no hesitation in asking Plymouth to bat first. Gareth Stuckey and Adam Warden both took early wickets and Ivybridge looked on top early on. The experienced duo of Andy Sewell (72) and Syd Lawrence (18) stuck to the task and gradually got the scoreboard moving.
The pair had just posted a fifty stand when Lawrence fell, caught at point by a stunning diving catch from Jeff Wakeham. Barlow and Sewell then added a further 49 in 10 overs, before Chris Greenhouse’s medium pacers slipped through Barlow’s defence.
Josh Coker bowled a good spell from the other end and deservedly picked up Sewell, caught behind by Jacobs from a fine edge.
Venu Kondamudi (26) and Plymouth skipper Al Stewart (26 not out) batted with some aggression helping the home side add 70 in the last ten overs to reach a respectable 194 for 9.
Nick Thomas (3 for 56) and Chris Greenhouse (3 for 50) finished top wicket-takers for Ivybridge.
In reply, Ivybridge looked to have got off to a decent start, and even though they lost Kev Jacobs after just 5 overs, Tony Mailling and Chris Greenhouse looked to have things under control. The first of two key turning points was the introduction of the left arm spin of Nigel Hughes. First he bowled Mailling and then three balls later had the dangerous Sam Henderson adjudged lbw.
The off spin of Jimmy Haffenden also proved difficult to cope with on a pitch that was slowing up and Mike Tuckwell and Aidan Tookey also followed in quick succession.
Ivybridge were still in with a fighting chance and Greenhouse and Jeff Wakeham looked like they had put the visitors back in with a chance adding 29 in 8 overs. The second crucial turning point then occurred as a brilliant piece of fielding from Kondamudi at point, saved runs from a nice drive from Greenhouse. The batsmen had set off anticipating the ball having beaten the fielder. However, the quality of the fielding was such that Kondamudi managed to gather the ball and throw down the stumps at the wicket-keepers end with a direct hit, with only one stump to aim at. Greenhouse was left stranded and was run out for 45.
Ben Robins picked up Nick Thomas second ball, as the Ivy’s skipper nicked one to the keeper exposing the tail. Reece Small managed to take all three remaining wickets as Plymouth secured a win by 53 runs. They stay top of the table.
